Alpina has a long history as a BMW tuner and now make a nice lineup of cars that are faster and more sporty than the standard production line while offering a different mix of sport and luxury than the M cars. Everything I've seen says the Alpina cars ride more nicely than a standard BMW sport suspension, but offer handling that is comparable to an M. They also have a wider power band & automatic transmissions that are more suited towards daily driving compared to the traditional M car which were optimized for high RPM performance. I think that they've complemented M cars nicely while offering production integrated with BMW.
