I have been looking at importing too. If the cost is under $1000 no duty or gst will be charged. One supplier advised he would be happy to show total value under $1000 for $3000 worth of gear.

My item was sent via a freight forwarder in Canada and arrived via Toll Air Services but they don't do Customs clearance work.
It cost me $375 in total. (excluding my actual freight cost)
Includes the following:
I.T.F. / A.P.C.A. fees
Customs entires
Cartage to Quarrantine @ Rosebery
Quarantine Permit
Quarantine attendance/inspection
Stamp duty/Misc's fee service
General agency fees by brokers.
