) a few years ago, I actually cut out the inner sheet metal and left only the outer skin and whatever is necessary for the door latch mechanism. So the doors were very light.
It is actually both aesthetics and to cover the glass on the inside of the door. The OEM window glass is in there and if it were to break it will keep it in the door panel. We are not allowed to gut the passenger door for weight. Only way we could gut it is if that side had a nascar style roll cage. That way it could be gutted for room of the cage.
