OP - since you claim you "don't know a whole lot" about performance mods, do your research before buying/modding your car. Don't just slap on a tune, intake, downpipes blindly and not understand the benefits and drawbacks of those mods.
For $1000 I would buy better tires or suspension before doing any power mods, you will get more use out of those. This is advice from a guy who spent over $20,000 in mods on his car, including every performance mod you can think of.

Not bad advice. I would still recommend a tune for the best bang in performance. Tires are a good one too.
Searching is your friend OP and your not the first person to ask what to do. I would do whatever you want to do next to your car, afterall, its your car not ours.
