I can see why they shaped it like that. Its curled up in the center in order to avoid the turbulent wake off of the engine intake/crash structure. The idea that I can imagine is that despite making the wing smaller (reducing lift) it will boost efficiency to the point that it actually develops more lift than the old wing.
Lets find out if im right!
