Don't forget, as cars get newer, their engines may churn out 15% more power, but then they always end up weighing 10% more than the previous model! The F30 i think has broken this mold a bit as it is very similar in weight to the E90.

Couldn't agree more. You would need a good 100bhp more to pull away from them in the way you are hoping unfortunately.

I've had frigging 2.0 diesel Golfs keep up with me (no doubt remapped) - and it does pee you off.
Maybe a remapped Golf still does not have the power of a 330d, but I assume its lighter so power-to-wieght is so much closer to the point where there would not be that much in it in a drag race.
