The Wii-u is the newest\next gen version of the Nintendo Wii which has improved graphics and a nifty little gamepad type controller with a screen built into it which means they can play on the handheld console too when the TV is in use (whether you think this is a good or bad thing is up to you).

It is a marked upgrade on the standard Wii but whether your kids will care depends on how trend aware they are. I'm guessing that at 7 and 5 they might not be but if they are aware of the Wii-U and you buy then the older Wii then some disappointment might ensure. Be aware though that there is a massive difference in price, the Wii-U is going to be about 300.
