The number of people driving without insurance and tax is epic. If your mate wanted to risk it, just stay away from major roads (with ANPR) and it'll be fine for a few days...
A mate of mine didn't realise his mot had expired for 9months until his insurance renewal was due!!

My wife drove around for over a month without an MOT having not realised it had expired.
I dare say a lot of people do it.
