If you have the comfort access feature then you don't have to stick the key into the slot. If you don't have the feature then you do. As far as the battery goes, it is a lithium battery I believe. They die in average of about 5 years I say. The comfort access keys you can replace, I believe it's a cr2032 battery for the e90 fobs. Not comfort access if your battery dies then you have to get a new key.
