You can keep an air-air intercooler setup for a precooling solution then add a smaller water-air cooler that can be installed between the a-a intercooler and charegpipe. Plenty of room on that side of the N54 to fit a w/a intercooler like this or smaller:
Something like this usually only has a 0.1 PSI reduction
It can be a small and affective setup easy to maintain.
Where would the heat exhange go ? BMW located their heat exchanger laying downwards in the front bumper area where the a/a intercooler would normally go. So size of an a/a intercooler and w/a heat exchanger will have to be dead on with some bumper modfications
