Bolts or bolt heads, would travel the same path as oil returning to the sump from the upper engine, ie: through the drain holes and the timing chain cavity. There was no chance that they would be sucked up through the oil pump as it has a screen on the intake. It *is* lucky that the bolts/bolt heads didn't get caught in any part of the very complicated BMW valvetrain, that would likely have caused damage but not a complete engine failure.
