It's (1) wishful thinking, (2) was installed for a purpose, and (3) is likely required to meet emmissions standards. You can bet that BMW didn't install it and make it difficult to replace just because they want to limit performance. Unless someone can provide proof that removal of this filter improves performance, isn't necessary and isn't required, I recommend against removing it. Having said that, I freely acknowlege that I don't know more about engines thn BMW! <g>
