I don't think this has anything to with Vanos. it's something along the lines of the actual torque being above expected torque. I came across a parameter that might fix it but I haven't tried it yet (also, I have never been able to reproduce this problem myself).
The actual error code is "Überwachung Motordrehmoment-Begrenzung", something like "Monitoring of Motor Torque Limitation". (I like seeing the actual German error codes when it comes to BMWs because people mistranslate or miss the context).
it's come up on a few N52s and N53s that I know of. I don't know if anyone has actually found a fix. There's a Boolean to turn off torque monitoring but it's not certain that it will fix this and/or not cause any other errors.
