Damn... yeah the mechanic is very incompetent or is purposely scamming you. You don't just change piston rings without even doing a compression test confirming. I'm no mechanic just a decent DIYer might be wrong but pretty sure that's accurate.

And the fact he tells you to not worry about a burning smell from your AC I'm baffled. Usually this means you have a oil leak that burns on the hot exhaust and it's how you smell it. In most cases it is just the valve cover gasket. But yeah the pics are hard to find, you would have to clean all of that first then look back again.

Now the oil consumption and exhaust smoke that could be another issue. How bad is your oil consumption? How many kilometres do you do before having to add a litre?
