Diesel is actually cheaper in most European countries then petrol/gas.

Diesel in Belgium is currently €1.458 per liter compared to €1.610 for 95 or €1.656 for 98 RON.

So not only do you get much better consumption (and therefor more range), but prices are lower and you get a lot more torque. Negative is that you pay more for the purchase of the car with a diesel engine.
