From the newly released PDF file attachment, the 335d compression ratio is 17.0 to 1, compared with the 335i's 10.2 to 1. This makes sense, because diesel engines require higher compression to ignite the fuel (as opposed to using the spark from a plug as in non-diesel petroleum engines).
Additionally, the bore/stroke of the 335d is reportedly 90/84 displacing 2993 cc and the 335i's 89.6/84 displacing 2979 cc.
This in large part explains the torque difference.
