This is my understanding (mostly from other turbo cars but i think it applies to ours): when the air gets to the turbo it has already been measured by the MAF so when the BOV vents the air to the atmosphere, there is less air in the system than what the ECU thinks should be there. Consequently there is fuel added for the "phantom air" which has just been let out and you are temporarily rich.
