Not that I confuse technicians with engineers (even they can't seem to be able to figure this one out), but don't let the opinion of a few lead you to make generalizations about them all. I've asked 2 techs what they thought and they were actually pretty educated about it - both mentioned the discrepancies about repeated failures in some cars with long lasting pumps in others as particularly confusing. Either way, with regard to this issue, it's not a tech's job to know what causes HPFP failures, just to properly install a new one in when BMW approves it
