You'd still be pushing around (rotating) the entire powerless front half of the xDrive system, it would only be disconnected at the front driveshaft out of the transfer case. I'm not sure all that metal is meant to be whipped around that way for very long. Imagine all the twisting forces going on inside the front axles and diff that are normally damped out with power application from the TC.
I think that once the system is disengaged from the source, the stress is going to be far less than constant power through the front driveshaft.
If they say at high speeds the front disengages (im not sure) then there should be no problem permanently disabling it.
