I believe the limit on listing is 255 folders (each artist would be a folder) and 500 tracks per folder. If there are more they will still play, they just won't display in a list that exceeds the limit. This is the reason you need to split your files into playlists. For instance, I created 5 playlists to cover all the artists (A-D, E-G, H-L, etc.).
