Seriously guys, unless you are driving really hard, or in heavy urban conditions, the 320d should be returning 40+ mpg. Even my 330d touring auto has returned a genuine 37mpg over 35k miles.
Cruising at around 70 mph will give a good indication of how a car is really doing for mpg. I'd expect over 50mpg from an 'in tune' 320d saloon. The 330d auto will easily return mid 40's at a 70 mph.
