My F10 has the iDrive that followed the one in the '07 cars and my E92 doesn't have iDrive. FWIW, I had no problems with the IP4 on the newer iDrive in the F10 and it works fine in my E92, displaying my contacts without issue.

I haven't tried a software update yet... My car was in a couple months ago for the battery recall, would they have checked the software version then?

I'm not trying over bluetooth, this is with the ipod dongle in the console, plugged into aux and the usb adapter.
