Not a good enough reason in my book though

Reasons we now have diesels (after a long line of sporting petrols).

Effortless, quiet motorway cruising, 2000RPM at 80MPH.

Better fuel consumption, 50% better for the type of driving we do.

Torque, instantly available you never get caught out.

Grin factor, the look on other driver faces when they realise they've been dieseled.

Add in a few other things like increased reliability and lower servicing costs and we will be unlikely to buy another petrol again (as a main car).

I may be generallising a bit here, but my comments above refer to BMW diesels. I have driven plenty of other diesels with my job and I can safely say that none of the other manufacturers come close to the engines produced by BMW. The overall package of performance, economy and refinement is second to none.
