Yeah I think being prepared for problems is as important as talking to the owner, checking records/history, doing PPI, test-drive etc. It sounds like you already know what the common issues are and are prepared (at least mentally) to handle any other issues that come up (though I wouldn't foresee many at 23k miles).

It's always strange to me when people come here complaining and acting shocked about having repairs on a car they bought that is known to be costly to maintain when things go wrong. So as long as you have some form of warranty to help if/when things go badly (good paying job, cash stash, BMW/third-party warranty) you should be good.
