Just so I'm clear, the topic is how to clean the soot, carbon black crap for inside and inner edge of the exhaust. Metal polish, soap and water will not - or rather has not - done anything in the ways of removing the soot from the pipes on 2 different cars of mine. I wonder if some of the suggestions above are meant for the outside of the tips and not the inner parts?

I'll have to try something more abrasive than soap & water with a soft-ish wire brush which didn't absolutely zero in terms of removing the black crap. I might give the brillo pad a try with some Simply Green if I still have some.
