You do have to repeatedly press a button to respond to it but the system is much more advanced that what i know of iDrive.

You have access to the Climate Control, Phone (Different button), General settings, Audio and Navigation through the same interface. As BK said, it also responds instantly to the button and tones down other sounds so it can hear you.
