I agree. My e60 was the first 5 series I've had and I felt a little dissapointed. It was a great car, but not as focused as all my previous 3 series (i've had a few).
The only thing I feel you lose is the space, but the e90 is so much more involving, direct and nimble that you don't much care.
I also found the build quality much more like BMW of old and the seats much more comfy.
Unlike you I switched to petrol (heart ruling head) so my MPG is ridiculous - ah but what a noise !
