Many of us don't carry a balance on credit cards, but I have to admit, there still is a tendency to spend more with one. When it's cold hard cash, we think twice about a purchase.

I totally agree. I have 1 cc for work, and 2 for personal use. The 2 personal use cards rarely have a balance on them, and are used primarily for emergencies, and when we travel.
