I think you're misunderstanding me, or maybe I wasn't being very clear. The comment I made was referring to "how to raise you credit score". I wasn't telling him he should or shouldn't pay off his balances.
Unfortunately the way credit scores work, if you want to have a high credit score....say above 800, you have to have credit cards. And yes, the problem with this is that people let their balances get out of hand, start paying the minimum amount, and a nasty cycle begins that can be pretty hard for some people to get clear of.
