According to my SA and Mike Miller of BMWCCA, registering the battery informs the IBS how to control the rate of charge. Obviously, undercharging will deplete the battery, but overcharging can damage some of the electrics. On my '07 E91 a bad IBS was calling for 17.5 volts, which ultimately resulted in a damaged JBE as well as a failed battery.
