Is it me or do the older generation flagships, w140 or e38 for example, make a bigger statement than the modern cars?! This car is beautiful both inside and out, but it's positioning with buyers perplexes my "traditional" views on what a flagship is meant to be.

I don't mean to say that the new cars aren't gorgeous, and typically of the same exceptional quality if not greater, but there was an altogether different presence to the older cars... more understated, and in many respects weightier with more attitude. I always saw the older generations as cars that commanded respect through that presence and timeless elegance, rather than making a statement by being an object of beauty or an expression of modern design. To me, the e38 and w140 were true flagships, these modern Ss and 7s are just bigger Es and 5s.

Could be I'm just stodgy though?!
