I dunno, ask the europeans, they love wagons and probably because a wagon is the most efficient and versatile auto purchase you could make. Audi and BMW have been making beautiful wagons for decades, and I think it says something when Audi made its first RS4 in Avant spec only.
I've owned five cars; two wagons, a sedan and two hatchbacks. The sedan was least useful.
