You should have questioned the dealership on the spot about this:
"If I fill up and this 7/8 stuff persists, I'm bringing it right back and you guys are fixing this for free."
Hate to say it but the best way sometimes is to be brutally honest and blunt.
They obviously knew the 7/8 fuel gauge was an issue and yet they were still dicks to sell you the car with nary a mention about it.
