I would say stick with your Xsi and upgrade your lens.
While the focus/metering/exposure algorithm etc are more advanced on a 40/50D, the lens is still what makes the photos. Also, a possible reason that the photos from a 40/50D may seem better (on the LCD or on a monitor?) is that the pixel on the 50D camera LCD is twice the resolution than that of a Xsi.
I'd say, keep your Xsi, buy a great lens, and invest in a FF in the future.
Personally, I dont think it is worth it to upgrade Xsi to a 50D. If you're to upgrade, get the FF or 7D (just amazing camera and it is basically a 1D with crop sensors. )
