The radio needs to be programmed for

The radio needs to be programmed for the type of sound system and
your options. This was possible with a simple coding cable on the early
model year cars and then at some point if required and icoma cable.
There three possible main configurations for the sound system stereo
(base system most of world and US 2010 early 2011) Hi Fi and L7.
Then the options are things like usb ,pdc, sos.

If for example you get a radio that is programmed for L7 and you put in
a Hi Fi car there will be no sound, as the sound is transmitted via the fiber optic
bus in a L7 car.

Also there is some change in the radios over time .
The early ones had no built in HD
The newer ones have built in HD
USB and satellite where these used to be separate modules .
It would be nice if there was a list.

I would talk to Bimmertech about radio coding if its something
you don't want to invest a great amount of time to do.
