If you are interested enough in cameras to even ask the question that you did in starting this thread, ANY compact is going to leave you frustrated in the end. You really ought to be looking at a bridge camera.
I use DSLR's most of the time but I still have a bridge camera and various compacts for when I can't be bothered to lug the gear about and the results I get from the newer bridge cameras never cease to impress me.
