I think the objective is to find the optimum battery capacity that makes a meaningful improvement in fuel efficiency without weighing so much that the vehicle runs like a loaded truck.

This has been done in race car kinetic energy recovery systems. Until now, hybrid drive batteries have very high capacities to squeeze the last drop of fuel efficiency out. It is time to approach the problem differently.
