Maybe in your southern state - here in AL, we pay vehicle property tax (ad valorum) each year to get the plates
When I lived in OH, the plates were only $50 a year, no matter what the value of the car - but then again, the property taxes were 3x what they are here.
Bottom line: the gov't is going to take your money, it's just a matter of how they get it
