Ghost doesn't provide an OS; it usually boots DOS and runs from there. That is safe, but I agree with *NEVER* booting Windows with that drive connected. And I also agree that Linux is your best bet for imaging. dd will make a perfect copy. And you are much more likely to get somewhere exploring the disk with Linux.
