they are there, the problem is the top hat of the strut isnt really made to sit on the strut tower, i see it giving problems squeeking down the road, not to mention that plate sprreads the weight across the top hat and supports the 3 studs.
even if its perfectly safe to take it out, the plate is an 1/8 thick, its not gonna be a visable extra drop, so it should be just left in
