Yes, it is the grey 3m tape. Picked it up from Autozone. There may be thinner version available. Keep in mind the area where the tape is placed is slightly recessed. So, just don't get too thin tape.

Not a bad idea. I would first place painters tape around the edge for easy cleanup.
