Sounds complicated change of car, you'll need to put on retention first.
When getting new have always taken the default reg for a month or two before transferring my own onto it. That way when you sell it'll revert back to that one making the documentation all match.
Depends how long you keep the car though, the longer the less important this will be to any future owner.
