Yes, it is a result of drive by wire with no mechanical connection - but BMW could easily get rid of it by changing the software algorithms that control the throttle.
I have driven other DBW cars that did not have this noticeable lag
Still nothing like good ole' fashioned mechanical throttle linkage though
