I have asked the question now to not only my dealer but also a engineering company in the know.
In their own words,
"The BMW short block 6 cylinder diesel is a very good engine, but loud. Most of the noise is the fuelling system and related to the very high pressure it operates at".
Not my words, just repeating what they said. Which does not answer why the Audi V6 diesel is so whisper quite.
