What are your oil levels? when was your last oil change? on my previous e46 I had a similar problem with a rattle sound coming from the engine bay, but it was due to low oil. After my oil service the sound went away.

Just had oil change a month ago, oil level seems ok as there is no fault coming on the screen.
I believe the rattle sound would not be the ticking sound generated as a result of the poor engine block design found on any Pre 2009 model (the common issue).
Instead, the sound only appears occasionally when i accerate from stationary, sometimes i hear that sound from a old Japanese car which drives pass me too.
P.S. when i accerate, i am pressing the pedal gently but not aggressively.
