It depends somewhat on the speed of your computer and the complexity of the update. I'd say 40 minutes is very rare, I do not recall that. 5 to 10 minutes is more common, which is very irritating when I am ready to go home and I am being delayed by updates, or arrive to work and an update has to go in, or I am in the middle of a complex spreadsheet and an update notice comes in.

I do take advantage of postponing the update until I go to lunch or as I am packing up to leave. I have left the computer on and the monitor off at times when I was ready to go and the update was still going. My laptop at work has a docking station with a monitor and also a screen lock out after 15 minutes or so.
