Would bad coils trigger CEL light? Before starting to replace things, wanted to pose a question on where to start looking.

I was getting this too. At first I thought it was a vacuum leak because I had to replace my starter and I had a CEL showing misfire. I filled up, put STP fuel system cleaner concentrate and after 30 miles or so CELL was gone and the rough idle. I only tried it because I read it on 3 different forums. So it was the cheapest fix.
