It is kind of amazing. I campaigned an E36 M3 in SCCA/NASA and before that, I was a maniac road driver and I always did my own routine stuff (oil, brakes) and some simple repair work. People were always shocked, as if you had to have a PHD to work on a BMW.
The reality is, most modern cars are very simple to work on. Parts are accessable, everything is well labeled and I don't understand how people think computers are more complicated: These days, when an engine part fails, the computer tells you the part that failed, you plug in a new one and it works. Working on old cars requires the ability to jury rig all sorts of stuff- Plug-n-Play seems a lot nicer but once you put a computer on anything, people flip out and act like it must require an MIT grad to work on.
