Never said they didn't. It's the purpose of a business.

Difference is who they're marketing to (the demanding performance car driver vs. everyone with a semi-decent paying job that want the status), and if they're letting money cloud judgement on what is a good car or not from an engineering standpoint. Its when they made money their PRIMARY goal that they shot themselves in the foot, at least among enthusiasts.

Without this judgement, all cars are for the same function - some are more expensive than others for no reason then.

Same arbitrary value as buying name brand clothes vs. stuff from your local Kohl's.

The difference in cost used to be for the performance you were getting. Now it's all about riding the old curtails and using the BMW name as a status symbol.
Think you've got the rose tinted spectacles on there. There's always been less than stellar bottom of the range models that have probably been over priced for what they were, and there have also been times when the company has had to make models that weren't what the enthusiasts wanted in order to maintain a healthy business - or just to survive if you look back further.
