I'm pretty sure that purists want to maintain that heritage to the original M3 (E30 chassis), which was an inline 4-cylinder but b/c it was so light the thing flew. 2nd gen (E36) and 3rd gen (E46) both got the straight 6 screamers. The E9x broke the mold, it got a V8 and picked up a lot of weight -- Seems to be another complaint among purists, that this gen's M3 is too civilized and needs to be put on a diet. The F30 3-series has already shown that its lighter than the outgoing E90, so I'm sure the F80 M will be substantially lighter too.

And I'm sure at highway speeds is when the 335 can showcase its power advantage.
